Choose your domain name. Choose
your web host. Design your web site. Test it. Upload
it to the Internet. Then make sure you are monitoring
your web site. Start here by picking a good domain
name. |
 |
|
Stop! Before buying that domain, have you figured
out what you need?
First, you need to decide the domain name. Here are
a few factors to consider:
- If you might ever be marketing
your site offline -- on radio or in print, for example
– you need a domain name that is easy to spell and
not easy to misspell. Shorter is better. Simple is
better. For a website on blue shoes, for example:
www.blueshoes.com
works. www.shoesofthecoloroftheocean.com
does not.
- Your URL should help brand you, so that it works
with your other marketing efforts to create that verbal
and mental image your customers will remember. If
your company name is Blue Suede Shoes, www.bluesuedeshoes.com
would work. But be careful if you market offline,
as many people will mistype www.blueswadeshoes.com
.
- Your domain name should tell the search engines
what you are all about. Since very few people search
for blueshoes or blusesuedeshoes, www.blue-shoes.com
might actually be a better choice.
- You need the right extension. Unless you service
local customers in a specific country, most web surfers
expect to see .com after a URL. In fact, if you promote
your site offline, many people will remember your
domain name and type in .com at the end, even if you
advertise .info or .net. Unless you have a reason
to choose a different extension, .com is your best
choice.
Then you will need to choose
where to buy your domain name. Most people buy their
domain names on price, but here are a couple additional
factors to consider.
